This house won a 1964 design award sponsored by a trade group to promote the use of concrete in residential building. It was designed by Fred McDowell, an architect who worked extensively in Southern California in the mid-20th century and was responsible for a number of buildings at nearby Pitzer College.

The property is within a 15-minute drive of the Claremont Colleges, a group of five liberal arts schools that includes Scripps College and Harvey Mudd College. San Bernardino is about 45 minutes to the east. Driving to Palm Springs takes about an hour and a half.

Price per square foot: $829

Indoors: This house is cantilevered off a hillside, but has a street-facing front entrance.

Inside is a foyer with a tile floor and access to a powder room. The tile flooring continues into an open living area with high ceilings; room for a large sectional sofa and dining table (both available to buy, along with the rest of the home’s furniture); a fireplace with a raised hearth and a metal surround that extends to the ceiling; a glass wall overlooking the valley below; and glass doors at either end that open to a deck and the pool area.

On the other side of a free-standing wall is a den facing a kitchen with honey-colored cabinetry and stainless steel appliances, including a Thermador range.

All three bedrooms are off a hallway extending from the foyer. The primary bedroom, at the far end, has sweeping views and a glass door that opens to the pool area; the en suite bathroom has a double vanity and a windowed combination tub and shower. Another bedroom is next door, and the third bedroom is across the hall, with a built-in Murphy bed; they share a full bathroom.
